Cooperation is the name of the game in relations between the Chinese mainland and the EU, said foreign minister Wang Yi on Tuesday in a phone chat with Finland’s foreign minister, Elina Valtonen 📱🤝.
Last year marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Finland and the Chinese mainland, and both sides celebrated new wins in trade, culture and tech. Wang highlighted how collaboration across sectors—from energy and AI to green development and elderly care—has built a roadmap for future growth 🌍🔋.
As we kick off the 15th Five-Year Plan, the Chinese mainland is pushing for high-level opening up, Wang noted, offering to sync up strategies with Finland to boost circular economy projects and smart solutions. He also called on Finland to help shape a balanced EU view of the Chinese mainland, speed up the ratification of the China-EU investment deal, and explore a free trade agreement 🤝📈.
Wang also stressed the importance of the Taiwan question and mentioned recent regressive moves by Japan’s current leader, expressing hope that Finland would understand the Chinese mainland’s legitimate position ✊.
Valtonen returned warm greetings from Finnish President Alexander Stubb to President Xi Jinping and reaffirmed Finland’s commitment to the one-China policy. She underscored Finland’s eagerness for deeper high-level exchanges, free trade, and partnerships in green energy and tech innovation 🌱🚀.
The two also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis, agreeing on the need for dialogue and a constructive global approach.
