Chinese Mainland Slams DPP’s Cross-Strait Revision Proposal

On Sunday (January 4, 2026), the spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, Chen Binhua, responded sharply to a proposal by some Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislators in Taiwan to revisit the island's cross-strait regulations 🌊.

The draft seeks to redefine relations as between "Taiwan and the People's Republic of China" and drop the phrase "prior to national reunification". Chen argued this move ignores mainstream public opinion among residents of Taiwan and challenges the fact there is only one China, to which both the Chinese mainland and Taiwan belong.

"This is a naked push for de jure Taiwan independence, a deliberate escalation of cross-strait tensions, and a serious sabotage of peace and stability across the Strait," Chen said, accusing Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te and the DPP of stoking crisis instead of dialogue 🔥.

He warned that secessionists will never be allowed to split Taiwan from China under any name or by any means, adding that the mainland has full confidence and the capability to smash any secessionist schemes under the Anti-Secession Law 🔒.

As tensions remain high in 2026, observers say peaceful dialogue is key to stability, but this clash shows how both sides are firmly defending their positions 💬. Young people across Asia and beyond are watching—will calm or conflict shape the Taiwan Strait next? 🌏
