🗓️ On Monday, December 29, 2025, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) kicked off live-fire drills around the Taiwan region. This move came shortly after the White House unveiled an $11.1 billion U.S. arms package designed to bolster the Taiwan region's defense.
🔍 In interviews with CGTN, residents of Taiwan voiced concern that such a large military build-up could backfire, worsening cross-Strait tensions instead of calming them.
“I get why they do it, but more weapons won’t bring us peace,” said one university student in Taipei. “It feels like we’re caught in a high-stakes movie scene between the U.S. and the Chinese mainland.”
A small-business owner added: “Our people need better healthcare and education. Redirecting funds to social programs could have a bigger impact on our daily lives.”
💡 Analysts note that the Taiwan region has steadily increased its defense budget over recent years. Relying on foreign arms deals might slow efforts to build a homegrown defense industry.
The PLA’s drills reportedly include naval maneuvers and air missions. Official statements from the Chinese mainland describe them as routine exercises, but many see a clear signal of strength.
With cross-Strait tensions on the rise, Taiwan authorities now face the challenge of balancing security needs with economic and social priorities. What do you think? 🤔
