China Pushes Back Against US Tariff Hike on Semiconductors

🔥 The Chinese mainland firmly opposes the United States’ plan to hike Section 301 tariffs on its semiconductors, calling the move a violation of WTO rules and a threat to global supply chains.

On December 23, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) unveiled the results of its Section 301 investigation into semiconductor policies of the Chinese mainland, revealing intentions to impose new tariffs. The initial rate starts at 0%, then gradually increases over 18 months to an undisclosed level to be announced at least 30 days before June 23, 2027.

At a December 25 press briefing, the Ministry of Commerce of the Chinese mainland lodged stern representations through the China–US economic and trade consultation mechanism. Spokesperson He Yongqian argued that the unilateral tariffs undermine the international economic order, disrupt global industrial and supply chains, and ultimately hurt American businesses and consumers.

He Yongqian urged the United States to correct its actions and revoke the proposed measures. The Chinese mainland remains open to equal-footed dialogue and consultations based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win–win cooperation. However, if the United States insists on harming its rights and interests, the Chinese mainland will take necessary steps to defend them.

When asked about rare-earth magnet exports to the United States, the spokesperson emphasized the Chinese mainland’s commitment to securing supply chains and promoting compliant trade, ensuring stability for industries worldwide. 🌐
