Beijing isn't holding back its critique: On Friday, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office of the Chinese mainland, voiced strong dissatisfaction with Washington's plan to allocate $1 billion in the U.S. National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2026 towards "security cooperation" with Taiwan.
Chen warned that inserting Taiwan-related provisions into the Act sends "a gravely wrong signal" to separatist forces pushing for "Taiwan independence" and undermines the core of cross-strait ties. He urged the U.S. to:
- Abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques
- Refrain from enforcing the Taiwan-related provisions of the Act
- Eliminate adverse effects and handle the Taiwan question with utmost prudence
Chen also reminded Taiwan authorities in the DPP that no matter how much they rely on Washington, they "can never change the fact" that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and cannot alter the historical trend of national reunification 🕊️.
As tensions simmer in the Taiwan Strait, this latest exchange highlights the delicate balance between major powers and the ever-evolving landscape of cross-strait relations.
