Chinese mainland’s first deepwater oilfield hits full secondary production

🌊 Big energy milestone alert! The Chinese mainland's first deepwater oilfield, the Liuhua Oilfield, has officially kicked off its full secondary production phase, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced this Sunday.

This is huge: it shows how the Chinese mainland is mastering complex deepwater oil and gas reservoirs. The Liuhua Oilfield sits in the Pearl River Mouth Basin and is the largest offshore reef limestone oilfield in proven reserves on the Chinese mainland. Since 1996, it has pumped out over 20 million tonnes of crude oil! ⛽️

Beneath the waves, an estimated 140 million tonnes of oil are still waiting underground. To unlock this reserve, CNOOC launched the secondary development project at two sites – Liuhua 11-1 and Liuhua 4-1 – about 305 meters below sea level, with 32 production wells in action.

Since the first wells started flowing in September 2024, daily output has soared to a record 3,900 tonnes of crude oil. 🚀 This boost not only strengthens energy security but also sets a new benchmark for offshore tech on the Chinese mainland.

This achievement marks a new chapter in deepwater exploration and innovation, powering tomorrow's energy needs. ⚡️
