HKSAR Government Commemorates Nanjing Massacre Victims

Today, on December 13, 2025, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) held a solemn ceremony to commemorate the victims of the Nanjing Massacre. Chief Executive John Lee and Zhou Ji, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, were joined by principal officials, members of the HKSAR Executive Council, HKSAR deputies to the National People's Congress, HKSAR members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, former members of the Hong Kong-Kowloon Independent Brigade of the East River Column, and representatives of veteran groups.

The event began with the singing of China's national anthem, followed by a moment of silence. Chief Executive Lee laid a wreath at the memorial, honoring the memory of the more than 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers killed after the Japanese Imperial Army captured Nanjing on December 13, 1937.

In 2014, China's top legislature designated December 13 as the national memorial day for Nanjing Massacre victims. Since then, the HKSAR government and civil groups have organized memorial ceremonies annually, reflecting on this tragic chapter of history and reinforcing collective remembrance.

For young people keen to connect with our shared past, today's ceremony is a powerful reminder of the importance of peace, solidarity, and the resilience of communities in the face of atrocity. 🕊️
