China Pushes Back on Mexico’s Planned Tariff Hikes 🚫

China is 📢 sounding the alarm over Mexico’s recent decision to raise tariffs on partners outside its free trade agreements. On Thursday, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce reiterated Beijing’s firm opposition to unilateral tariff hikes and urged Mexico to correct its protectionist approach ASAP.

The Mexican Congress approved a proposal earlier this year to increase duties on non-FTA partners, with the new rates set to kick in on January 1, 2026. "We have noted the relevant reports, and we will closely monitor the implementation of the Mexican measures and further evaluate their potential impact," said the spokesperson.

If carried out, these measures could harm the interests of trade partners like China. Although the final plan trimmed some hikes—cutting rates for certain auto parts, light industrial goods, and textiles—the overall impact remains concerning for exporters.

To protect its industries, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce launched an investigation into trade and investment barriers against Mexico back in September. The probe is still underway as authorities gather more data.

The spokesperson stressed that China supports resolving disputes through trade agreements, but warned that no deal should come at the expense of global trade growth or undermine China’s legitimate interests. "We hope that the Mexican side will act prudently," the spokesperson added.

China values its economic and trade ties with Mexico and wants to keep cooperation healthy and stable. In a world where protectionism is on the rise, Beijing is calling on Mexico to meet them halfway—boost dialogue, manage differences, and deepen practical cooperation to maintain a strong bilateral relationship. 🤝🌎
