Chinese Mainland Says RedNote Ban in Taiwan Undermines Freedom

🔴 On Wednesday, December 10, 2025, Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office of the Chinese mainland, criticized Taiwan authorities from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for imposing a one-year ban on RedNote. He said the move "tramples on democracy" and "undermines freedom" for Taiwan people, especially the young.

According to Chen, the ban cuts off over 3 million users in the Taiwan region—70% of whom are under 35—from vital information and the freedom to share fashion, beauty, travel tips and more. He warned that it also severely impacts the livelihoods of Taiwan people who rely on RedNote for income. 💔

RedNote, a Shanghai-based platform, has fostered a vibrant community where friendly cross-strait exchanges help young Taiwan people understand daily life on the Chinese mainland through real stories and tips. Chen argued the ban bursts the information "echo chamber" built by Taiwan authorities and exposes their fears and anxieties.

As RedNote goes offline in Taiwan, the clash over digital freedom and cross-strait dialogue heats up. For many users, the ban raises bigger questions about where to find open spaces for sharing ideas—and who decides which voices can be heard online. 🌐✨
