Wang Yi Reiterates Historical, Legal Case Against Taiwan Secession

On Monday, December 8 in Beijing, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, met with German foreign minister Johann Wadephul to discuss the Taiwan question. 🌏

Wang Yi stressed that any attempt to pursue Taiwan secession violates the constitution and international law, and interferes in the Chinese mainland's internal affairs. 🔒

He laid out the historical and legal milestones:

  • 📜 Ancient ties: The Taiwan region has been part of China since ancient times.
  • 📜 Cairo Declaration (1943): Japan must return territories stolen from China, including Taiwan.
  • 📜 Potsdam Proclamation (1945): Confirmed the Cairo terms by China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union.
  • 🏳️ Japan's surrender (August 15, 1945): Led to the Chinese government resuming sovereignty over the Taiwan region.
  • 🏛️ PRC succession (1949): The People's Republic of China became the sole legal government of China, including Taiwan.
  • 🏛️ UN Resolution 2758 (1971): Restored rights to the PRC and affirmed that Taiwan is a province of China.
  • 🤝 1972 Sino-Japanese Joint Statement & 1978 Treaty of Peace and Friendship: Japan recognizes the PRC as the only legal government and accepts Taiwan as part of China.

Wang Yi warned that recent remarks by Japan's current leader on hypothetical Taiwan scenarios violate China's sovereignty, challenge post-war commitments, and risk peace in Asia. ⚠️

With 2025 marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he said Japan should reflect deeply and act with caution. 🕊️

Using the Taiwan question to provoke trouble and threaten China militarily is completely unacceptable, Wang Yi said. 🤝

This dialogue with Germany underscores Beijing's determination to anchor its position on the Taiwan question in solid historical and legal foundations, and to block any push for secession. 💬
