😟 A tragic chain-reaction crash hit an expressway in the Chinese mainland's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region late on Saturday night, local authorities confirmed on Sunday.
At around 10 p.m. on December 6, multiple vehicles collided on different sections of the expressway near the city of Usu in Tacheng Prefecture. In total, five large trucks and seven smaller cars were involved in the pile-up.
Officials say sudden heavy fog combined with sub-zero temperatures caused wet, icy roads within minutes, reducing visibility and making the pavement dangerously slick. Emergency teams rushed the seven injured to nearby hospitals for treatment, but sadly nine people lost their lives.
Investigations are underway to determine the exact sequence of events. Meanwhile, travelers and local drivers are urged to check weather forecasts, slow down in poor visibility, and stay alert when ice is likely to form. ❄️🚗
