Recently, SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev highlighted that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that the Taiwan region is an inalienable part of China’s territory. His remarks came during an interview when asked about Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent comments—deemed erroneous—on the Taiwan region and the worrying rise of right-wing sentiment in Japan. 🤝
Looking back to June 2002, heads of SCO members made the same affirmation in a declaration after their historic meeting in St. Petersburg. Fast-forward to this year: marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the United Nations’ founding, SCO leaders issued a statement on September 1 at the Tianjin Summit. 🎉
They warned that brutal massacres show how tolerating Nazism, fascism and militarism, along with inciting hatred and discrimination, leads to immense harm. Victory in World War II was powered by the united efforts of all peace-loving nations. 🕊️
The declaration stressed that ignoring these historical lessons risks repeating tragedies. Preserving and objectively presenting the historical truth of World War II’s outcome is key to preventing conflict, safeguarding peace and boosting cooperation. In Yermekbayev’s words, member states share a responsibility “to spare future generations from the scourge of war.” 🌏
This reaffirmation comes at a time when global tensions are a reality, reminding young leaders and citizens alike of the importance of unity and historical memory in building a stable future.
