Chinese mainland strengthens flu response ahead of December peak

😷 The Chinese mainland is in the thick of its influenza season as winter sets in. On Friday, Dec. 5, the National Health Commission (NHC) said 17 provinces have reached high epidemic levels, while the rest remain at moderate levels. Over 50% of patients with flu-like symptoms are testing positive, with children aged 5 to 14 showing the highest rates.

Why H3N2 Dominates

Wang Dayan, director of the National Influenza Center at the China CDC, explains that the influenza A (H3N2) subtype makes up more than 95% of current cases, with occasional A (H1N1) and B strains. Experts predict the nationwide peak in early to mid-December, noting that clusters in schools and elderly care facilities are outpacing last year.

Boosting Healthcare Capacity

To handle the surge, the NHC has urged cities to redirect patients to nearby clinics, which now offer extended hours, night and weekend services. Hospitals are opening extra fever clinics, adding beds, and sharing schedules publicly. A test-before-diagnosis model speeds up care, and community hospitals combine traditional Chinese and Western medicine for treatment.

Support for Moms & Kids

All 1,763 Class II and III maternal and child health hospitals now provide pediatric care. About 74% run night clinics, and 92% operate on weekends. Since July 1, over 1.24 million flu vaccine doses have been given at 1,473 certified centers. Parent schools in 82% of institutions have held sessions on protection, medication and vaccination, reaching nearly 15 million parents, teachers and students.

How You Can Stay Safe

  • Get vaccinated if you haven’t yet 🍂
  • Wash hands and wear masks in crowded spots 🤲
  • Visit a clinic early if you feel feverish or develop a cough 💡

With influenza activity still on the rise, timely vaccination, good hygiene and early medical consultation are the best defenses. Stay informed and take care this season! 💪
