On Friday, December 5, 2025, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian called on the United States to recognise the “highly sensitive nature of the Taiwan question” and fully implement commitments made by U.S. leaders under the one-China principle.
Lin spoke at a daily briefing, responding to enquiries about recent comments by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te. Lai’s pre-recorded video at the New York Times DealBook Summit sparked controversy for its portrayal of cross-strait ties as fragile and for remarks critics describe as separatist rhetoric.
“Some U.S. media are giving a platform for the leader of the Taiwan authorities to spread false statements that promote 'Taiwan independence,'” Lin said. “This seriously violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, sending a very wrong message to separatist forces.” 🚩
He added that Lai’s actions “reveal his true nature as a separatist advocating for 'Taiwan independence,' relying on the United States to seek independence. He is a 'peace destroyer' and a 'troublemaker.' Whatever he says or does is a futile attempt doomed to fail.”
As 2025 draws to a close, eyes are on Washington and Beijing to see how U.S. leaders respond to this call from the Chinese mainland. The outcome could shape cross-strait ties and wider regional dynamics in the new year.
