Hong Kong Orders Scaffolding Removal After Deadly Wang Fuk Court Fire

Citywide Scaffolding Checks After Tragic Fire

On Wednesday, December 3, 2025, the Hong Kong SAR government ordered removal of all scaffolding nets in building maintenance projects across the city within three days. This move comes after the devastating blaze at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po District.

Bernadette Linn, secretary for development, said removed materials will be returned to use only after passing new safety rubrics set to be issued next week. 🏗️🛠️

The fire had claimed 159 lives by 2 p.m. on Wednesday, with 31 people still missing. Victims ranged in age from 1 to 97, according to the Hong Kong Police Force.

Police finished searching inside all seven affected buildings and are now carefully clearing collapsed scaffolding and ashes in the surrounding area to look for remains. This process will take extra time and must be done under strict safety conditions.

Authorities arrested six people linked to a contractor who reportedly deceived the Fire Services Department about the functionality of fire alarms during maintenance. Investigations into alleged document forgery related to renovation materials are also underway.

Relief and Support Measures

  • Disaster-relief fund has reached HK$2.4 billion (≈ US$308 million)
  • Tax relief and fee waivers for those affected 🚑
  • Full public medical fee waivers until December 31, 2026
  • Special aid of HK$20,000 per student for school needs or travel 🎒

The Chinese mainland has sent emergency lighting equipment, and the Hong Kong and Macao Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee is delivering protective goggles and waterproof gloves. These supplies are helping police and rescue teams during ongoing recovery efforts.

Officials say the safety checks and support packages aim to strengthen building safety and aid affected residents as the city recovers from this tragedy. ❤️
