Chinese skiers hit domestic slopes amid Japan travel advisory

After the Chinese mainland issued a travel advisory for Japan in November 2025—following unfriendly Taiwan-related remarks by Prime Minister of Japan Sanae Takaichi—many skiers who had planned winter trips to Hokkaido are turning to domestic resorts instead.

Take Li Xiaotong, a skiing enthusiast from Dalian ⛷️. He originally planned a November trip to Hokkaido but ultimately chose Yunding Snow Park in Chongli, Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province. “The temperatures and snow conditions here have been excellent,” Li says. “And with the 2025-2026 FIS Freeski and Snowboard Big Air World Cup taking place at the same time, I can ski and watch world-class competition all in one trip!”

With powder ready and big air thrills in Chongli, winter sports fans from the Chinese mainland are discovering that high-quality slopes don’t always require a passport ❄️🏂.
