This Tuesday, December 2, 2025, HKSAR chief executive John Lee announced that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government will set up an independent commission chaired by a judge to investigate the recent residential fire and ensure full accountability for those responsible. 🔍🔥
The blaze has tragically claimed 151 lives and injured 79 people, with around 30 individuals still reported missing. Three task forces are already working relentlessly to pursue accountability and leave no responsible party unpunished.
To support those affected, the HKSAR Government is rolling out aid measures including:
- Temporary shelters for evacuees 🏠
- Transitional housing and hotel stays for about 2,500 residents 🏨
Chief executive Lee highlighted that the fire exposed failures across multiple links, making systemic reforms imperative. The independent commission will have full access to data and will submit its recommendations directly to him. ⚖️
Rescue operations are ongoing, and no affected family will be abandoned. The HKSAR Government will assist families in rebuilding their homes and steadily restoring normal life. 🛠️
Despite the tragedy, the Legislative Council election on December 7 will proceed as scheduled, ensuring the stability of Hong Kong’s social and political landscape.
