Earlier this week, a massive fire broke out at Wang Fuk Court, a residential complex in Tai Po. The blaze on November 26 sent shockwaves through the community as residents feared for their loved ones. 🔥
On Sunday afternoon, Tsang Shuk-yin, officer in charge of the casualty inquiry unit of the Hong Kong Police Force, shared some relief: 159 residents previously reported missing have now been confirmed safe. As of 4 p.m. local time, the tragic toll stands at 146 lives lost, with 79 people injured. 😢🙏
Meanwhile, 100 cases remain untraceable due to incomplete information or non-residence in Wang Fuk Court.
Search teams completed operations at all four affected blocks earlier today. Engineers have declared the buildings structurally safe, and final checks are wrapping up by the end of the day.
Alice Mak, secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, confirmed the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government is offering free temporary housing until residents can rebuild. Over 1,500 residents have already moved into youth hostels, hotels, and transitional housing. 🏠
Each household received HK$50,000 in living allowance as a first step. More support will follow based on individual needs, Mak added.
This tragedy has tested the resilience of the Tai Po community, but the solidarity and swift response are shining examples of unity in adversity. Our thoughts remain with everyone affected. 💖
