Fire at Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court Under Control After Fierce Blaze

In the early hours of Thursday, Nov 27, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) John Lee said that firefighters have gradually brought the fierce blaze at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po under control. 🚒🔥

From the outside, three of the eight residential buildings show no visible flames, while four others still have sporadic hotspots, Lee added. The fire, which broke out around 2:51 p.m. on Wednesday, spread to seven blocks before firefighters raised the alert to a No. 5 alarm at 6:22 p.m.

Tragically, the death toll has risen to 44, including a devoted firefighter, and 45 people remain in critical condition at local hospitals. The Hong Kong Hospital Authority activated its Major Incident Control Center to coordinate urgent medical care.

In a swift response, the HKSAR government is mobilizing all available resources. Departments have been instructed to focus on extinguishing remaining hotspots, rescuing any trapped residents, providing medical treatment, offering emotional support to affected families, and conducting a full investigation.

Hong Kong police superintendent Eileen Chung announced the arrest of three men from the construction company responsible for recent renovations at Wang Fuk Court. They face suspicion of manslaughter as authorities probe the fire’s cause.

Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region Sam Hou Fai reached out to convey his condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed Macao’s readiness to support rescue efforts if needed—a show of solidarity between the two regions. 🤝

As Hong Kong communities rally to support those impacted, the tireless work of firefighters and first responders continues. We'll keep you posted with updates. Stay safe, amigos! 🌟
