On Tuesday, November 25, 2025, a joint venture between the Chinese mainland battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) and global automaker Stellantis broke ground on a major lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery plant in Spain's Aragon region ⚡🔋.
With a planned investment of €4.1 billion (about $4.75 billion), the facility will run entirely on renewable energy and aims to start production by late 2026, manufacturing up to 50 GWh of LFP batteries annually for electric vehicles 🚗🔌.
Driving Spain's Green Future
Spanish Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism Jordi Hereu called the project a 'strategic milestone' in Spain's energy transition and industrial modernization. He said it shows strong confidence between Spanish and Chinese mainland partners and highlights Spain's role in Europe's electrification push.
Boosting Aragon's Economy
Jorge Azcon, president of the Aragon region, noted that the new plant strengthens a local automotive network of over 300 companies linked to the Stellantis factory in Figueruelas. He said: 'While factories elsewhere in Europe face closures, Aragon is opening a new cycle of growth by laying this cornerstone.'
Looking Ahead
Wu Qi, CEO of Contemporary Star Energy—the joint venture behind the plant—said the project is built on years of cooperation and a shared vision. He expects it to bring long-term industrial opportunities, boost local development, and deepen clean energy collaboration.
During the ceremony, representatives from both sides sealed copies of Spain's Heraldo de Aragon and the People's Daily into a time capsule at the factory entrance, symbolizing a lasting commitment to the plant's future 🚀.
