PM Takaichi’s Taiwan Remarks Trigger Protests and Global Pushback

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent remarks hinting at possible military involvement in the Taiwan Strait have ignited protests in Tokyo and drawn criticism from opposition figures and international watchers.

On Tuesday evening (Nov. 25), hundreds of citizens gathered outside the Prime Minister’s Office, waving banners reading Takaichi, withdraw your statement; Takaichi administration unacceptable; and Retract the remarks, resign now ✊.

In a China Media Group interview, Social Democratic Party Permanent Secretary Hiroji Yamashiro condemned the comments as a breach of international law and Japan’s 1972 commitment when it recognized the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government and affirmed that Taiwan is an integral part of China. “These remarks are incomprehensible and infuriating,” he said, warning that any military role by Japan could threaten regional peace and invite retaliation.

Yamashiro stressed that the Taiwan question is an internal affair of the Chinese mainland, and Japan’s pacifist constitution forbids aggression. He urged the nation to learn from its wartime past and avoid inflammatory rhetoric that could jeopardize cross-strait ties and drag Japan into conflict.

As debates heat up on social media and in parliament, many young professionals, students and diaspora communities are watching closely. Will public pressure force a retraction, or is this the start of a new security debate? Stay tuned as this political drama unfolds 🎬.
