China Urges Japan to Punish Attackers of Taiwan Compatriots

On Nov 26, 2025, the Chinese mainland’s State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Peng Qing’en spoke up 🔊, condemning a violent July attack on two Taiwan compatriots in Tokyo and calling for swift justice from Japanese authorities.

In July 2025, five men allegedly assaulted the victims on a street in Tokyo. Although Japanese police recently confirmed arrests in the case, Peng emphasized that only a severe punishment will send a clear message: violence against visitors is never acceptable.

“We strongly condemn such acts of violence and urge the Japanese side to deal with the offenders swiftly and severely,” Peng said. She pointed out that this year has seen multiple attacks targeting tourists in Japan, including those from the Taiwan region.

Peng also warned that recent provocative remarks by the Japanese prime minister have chilled the atmosphere for people-to-people exchanges. She noted a rise in extremist behaviors among Japan’s right-wing elements, fueled by anti-China sentiment, which threatens the safety of all visitors.

For young travelers planning a trip to Japan, these developments are a reminder to stay informed about local safety updates and keep in touch with authorities. ✈️🗼

As cross-border tourism continues to rebound, both the Chinese mainland and Japan face the challenge of ensuring a welcoming, secure environment for everyone.
