China Tells Japan to Mind Its Own Business on Taiwan

On November 20, 2025, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made headlines, bluntly telling Japan that Taiwan isn’t its concern 💬🇨🇳🇯🇵.

At a regular press conference, a reporter asked about recent comments by Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on a so-called “Taiwan contingency.” Mao Ning fired back, saying Japan has historical baggage on this issue and is the least qualified to offer opinions.

“Taiwan is China’s Taiwan, and whether anything happens there is not Japan’s business at all,” she said. “Using Taiwan to create trouble will only bring trouble to Japan itself.”

Many in China share her view. They point to Japan’s 50 years of colonial rule over Taiwan, when Japanese authorities imposed harsh policies and committed countless abuses.

This year also marks the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s restoration to China 📅. Mao Ning reminded Tokyo that this milestone highlights Taiwan’s place within China and underscores why outside interference is unwelcome.

As tensions simmer in East Asia, this exchange raises the stakes on cross-strait ties and Japan–China relations. Stay tuned as we track reactions from both sides!
