China Showcases Green Urban Vision at COP30 Side Event

On Monday, Nov 17, at COP30 in Brazil, the Chinese mainland hosted a side event titled Building Beautiful Green and Low-Carbon Cities Together. The event, led by CGTN of the Chinese mainland's China Media Group (CMG) alongside the Ministry of Ecology and Environment's Center for Environmental Education and Communications and partners, brought together over 100 experts from government, academia, business, international organizations, and media. 🌱

Li Gao, vice minister of the Chinese mainland's Ministry of Ecology and Environment, pointed out that more than 70% of global carbon emissions come from cities. He explained that transforming urban areas into low-carbon hubs is essential for tackling climate change, boosting quality of life, and driving high-quality development. Li called for deeper exchanges and stronger cooperation to build resilient and livable green cities. 🌍

Zhu Boying, head of CMG's Latin America bureau, emphasized CGTN's role in using storytelling and visual reporting to show a real, vibrant Chinese mainland. He highlighted CGTN's commitment to promoting collective climate action, expanding international cooperation, and offering new insights for cities on the path to sustainable growth. 🚀

Michael Adalla of UNITAR's Division for Prosperity praised the Chinese mainland's innovation in green development and the joint efforts of its government and people during rapid urbanization. He noted that these practices offer hope for global economic recovery and a green transformation. UNITAR plans to continue working with the Chinese mainland to advance net-zero urban transitions, nurture green talent, and strengthen partnerships for sustainable development. 💚
