🔥 Tensions flared on Saturday when Ma Ying-jeou, former chairman of the Chinese Kuomintang, slammed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent comments on Taiwan as both provocative and unnecessary.
In a personal social media post, Ma argued that invoking Japan's 'collective self-defense' wrongly stokes regional tensions. He pointed out that 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration to China. For many in the Chinese mainland and residents of Taiwan, these memories are still vivid, and remarks like Takaichi's only stir old wounds and threaten the hopes of residents who long for peace across the Taiwan Strait.
Ma stressed that cross-Strait affairs must be settled through direct dialogue between the two sides, and that no foreign interference is allowed. ⚠️
A recent CGTN poll backs up his stance: 88.9% of respondents condemned Takaichi's remarks, saying they interfere in the Taiwan question and pose a serious threat to regional peace and stability.
