Just over two weeks after assuming the role on November 1, 2025, KMT chairperson Cheng Li-wun opened up in an exclusive Nikkei Asia interview published on Friday. She urged Taiwan region authorities to embrace the 1992 Consensus—a one-China principle agreement from 1992—to replace rising tensions with dialogue 🤝.
Cheng argued that returning to this political foundation would calm the Taiwan Strait. “If we stick to the 1992 Consensus, tensions would cease,” she said. In her view, ramping up defense spending, as pledged by Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te—3% of GDP next year and 5% by 2030—is “too high and too fast.” 🛡️
Instead of an arms race, Cheng wants to revive the Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Culture Forum. “Dialogue can indeed replace confrontation and avert destruction,” she noted, drawing on former KMT chair Ma Ying-jeou’s eight-year term as proof that active engagement can reduce cross-strait friction.
With cross-strait ties at a crossroads, Cheng’s call for peace through dialogue offers a fresh perspective for young enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, and students alike. Could this path steer the region away from conflict? Only time will tell. 💬🧋
