China Warns Japan on Nuclear Stance and Military Expansion

In a statement at a regular news briefing on Friday, November 14, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian expressed deep concern over Japan’s recent military and security moves, calling them a "significant and negative policy shift." 🚨

Lin Jian pointed to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent remarks in parliament, which hinted at the possibility of abandoning the Three Non-Nuclear Principles—Japan’s pledge not to possess, produce, or introduce nuclear weapons. Senior officials have even suggested that Japan could consider hosting nuclear submarines. "This fully exposes Japan’s significant and negative policy shift and sends a dangerous signal to the international community," Lin warned.

The spokesperson also highlighted Japan’s growing defense budget, relaxed arms export rules, and pursuit of offensive weapons, saying these moves echo the militarism of World War II and risk destabilizing Asia. Lin said Japan’s comments on the Taiwan question, including possible armed intervention in the Taiwan Strait, have raised strong doubts among its neighbors and beyond.

Lin Jian urged Japan to reflect on its history of aggression, stick to a path of peaceful development, and rebuild trust with concrete actions. "Japan needs to show that it honors its exclusively defense-oriented policy and its commitments to peaceful development," he concluded.
