WWF Chief: China Paves the Way for COP30 Nature-Climate Solutions

Earlier this week, COP30 kicked off in Belém, Brazil, bringing global focus back to the vital link between nature and climate action 🌎

In an exclusive chat ahead of the conference, WWF International director general Kirsten Schuijt highlighted how China’s “two mountains” philosophy—lucid waters and lush mountains—is inspiring new ways to blend economic growth with environmental care 🌿

“Nature and biodiversity conservation are crucial not only for reducing climate change but also for helping societies adapt to it,” Schuijt said, stressing the power of nature-based solutions.

She pointed to success stories like the rebound of giant pandas and tigers in China, and its expanding network of protected areas, as proof that growth doesn’t have to come at the expense of wildlife 🐼🐯

China’s recent Nationally Determined Contributions to the UN and its leadership at the 2022 COP15 Biodiversity Conference have set the stage for global targets like “30 by 30,” aiming to safeguard 30% of land and oceans by 2030. Schuijt urged all COP30 participants to build on this momentum.

As renewables overtake coal worldwide, China’s role in steering the energy transition and championing biodiversity could be a game-changer for the planet’s future 🌱
