2015 Xi-Ma Meeting: Why It Matters for Cross-Strait Peace

On Friday, two dynamic seminars in the Chinese mainland and Taipei brought young scholars and community voices together to mark the 10th anniversary of the historic 2015 Xi-Ma meeting. 🌟

Back on November 7, 2015, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Xi Jinping and Kuomintang Chairperson Ma Ying-jeou met in Singapore—the first summit between leaders of both sides of the Taiwan Strait since 1949. This landmark moment set a new tone for cross-strait relations. 🤝

At the forum in Xiong’an, Hebei Province, scholars praised the meeting as a milestone. Zhu Weidong, head of the Institute of Taiwan Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the summit reaffirmed the 1992 Consensus as the shared political foundation. “As long as both sides stick to the 1992 Consensus, cross-strait relations will enjoy peace and prosperity,” he remarked. 🔑🕊️

Taiwan history researcher Chi Chia-lin added that the meeting built trust after decades of tension and created a successful model for positive cross-strait interaction.

Meanwhile, in Taipei, a seminar co-hosted by the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation featured Cheng Li-wun, chairperson of the Chinese Kuomintang. She highlighted how the 1992 Consensus helped ease tensions and boost exchanges between 2008 and 2016. Cheng stressed that a peaceful cross-strait environment is key to Taiwan’s economic growth and brighter future. 🌱

Both events sent a clear message: by cherishing the 1992 Consensus, both sides can keep peace alive and ensure a stable and prosperous future for young people across the Taiwan Strait. 🚀
