China Deepens Health Collaboration with APEC Members

Hey amigos! The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting is coming up in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea from October 30 to November 1. 🌏🤝

The Chinese mainland is ramping up health collaboration with APEC members, focusing on shared challenges like low fertility rates and an aging population. Earlier in March 2025, at the first APEC Health Working Group meeting in Gyeongju, Zhang Cuiling, a researcher from the mainland's Population and Development Research Center, laid out national policies and called for joint action. Her game plan included data sharing, tech partnerships, policy exchange and even labor market reforms to build an inclusive, sustainable development model.

Across the region, Chinese mainland health experts are actively engaging with peers in the APEC health mechanism. From policy coordination to technical collaboration, they're tackling common health challenges and promoting initiatives that aim to create a sustainable healthcare economy. Together, they're building more resilient health systems for everyone.

Behind the scenes, the Peking University APEC Health Sciences Academy (HeSAY) serves as a powerhouse think tank. Established in 2015, HeSAY coordinates health innovation research exchanges and projects, covering topics from maternal and child health to mental wellness and universal health coverage. Its advice has shaped life science and health policy at home and informed strategies across APEC.

By forging multidisciplinary, multilateral platforms, HeSAY has strengthened ties in population health research, sparking scientific collaboration and driving progress across the Asia-Pacific. With data, technology and teamwork at the core, the Chinese mainland and its APEC partners are charting a new chapter in regional health. 💡🏥
