Himalayan Fireworks in Xigaze Trigger Eco Probe

🌟 Who knew fireworks could spark more than just light in the sky? A recent display in the Himalayas set off alarms about environmental protection in Xizang’s grasslands.

On September 19, an Arc'teryx-sponsored fireworks show designed by artist Cai Guo-Qiang lit up Gyangze County at altitudes between 4,670 and 5,020 meters. The 52-second "ascending dragon" dazzled viewers… and ruffled a lot of grass. 🌱💥

Local authorities in the city of Xigaze, also known as Shigatse, launched a probe after a video of the event went viral. Their investigation found that the fireworks impacted over 30 hectares of fragile grassland in the Xizang Autonomous Region on the Chinese mainland.

Although short-lived pollution and damage were limited, experts warn that high-altitude ecosystems recover slowly. The report flagged long-term ecological risks and stressed the need for ongoing monitoring.

It also noted that Cai Guo-Qiang’s studio didn’t clean up all the fireworks residue and plastic debris, violating conservation rules on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. As a result, the authorities have filed a case against the studio and held local officials accountable for approving and supervising the event.

👉 What’s next? The incident is a reminder that even a few seconds of sparkle can leave a lasting mark on our planet. Let’s hope this sparks better planning and greener ideas for future celebrations! 🌍✨
