Gen Z Photographer Bridges Cultures Through China’s Wild Nature

American Gen Z conservation photographer Kyle Obermann, known in China as Ouyang Kai, has made it his mission to show the world the Chinese mainland's rich biodiversity through his lens. 🌍📸

Raised in Austin, Texas, Obermann spent over five years studying and working in China. During that time, he ventured into more than 20 nature reserves, from Giant Panda National Park in southwest China's Sichuan Province to Shennongjia National Park in central China's Hubei Province. 🐼🌲

Obermann notes that people don't realize how dramatic the environmental transformation has been over the past decade. Through his photos and stories, he captures the quiet victories of conservation and the everyday beauty of what he calls hidden classroom landscapes he never studied in textbooks.

He first picked up Chinese in college, but it was his journeys across the Chinese mainland that truly immersed him in the language and culture—and in turn, helped bridge understanding between China and the United States. His work is a reminder that nature speaks a universal language. 💚🤝

With each shot, Obermann hopes to inspire other young explorers to see the world's natural treasures not just as scenery, but as a shared legacy worth protecting.
