China Sets the Stage for a Gender Equality Boost 🌟
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the landmark 1995 Beijing women’s conference. To keep the momentum going, China convened the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, where Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted women’s vital role in social progress and outlined four key actions to advance gender equality worldwide.
Domestic Wins: From Classrooms to Courtrooms 🎓👩⚖️
Since 2013, targeted poverty relief has lifted millions of women out of poverty, with 690 million now enjoying a moderately prosperous life. Women make up over half of higher education students and 42.3% of judges nationwide. They account for 45.8% of China’s scientific community and more than half of internet entrepreneurs. Improved healthcare has also boosted women's average life expectancy past 80 years, and maternal mortality has fallen by 77% since 1995.
Global Impact: Taking Women’s Development Worldwide 🌍
China is also stepping up on the global stage. Since 2015, it has donated $20 million to UN Women, co-established the UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education, and launched projects in Africa that advance digital learning, healthcare, and vocational skills. Through the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, women-focused programs worth $40 million have benefited communities in over 20 countries.
What’s Next? Five Years of Fresh Commitments 🔮
At the meeting, Xi announced new pledges: $10 million to UN Women, $100 million for the Global Development Fund, support for 1,000 "small and beautiful" women’s initiatives, invitations for 50,000 women to join training in China, and the creation of a global center for women’s capacity building.
With these steps, the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women sets a dynamic path toward a more inclusive future, empowering women at home and abroad. 🚀
