China’s ‘Her Power’: 30 Years of Empowering Women

Hey Readers! Did you know it's been 30 years since the game-changing 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action? Now, from October 13-14, Beijing is hosting the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women 🎉. World leaders and advocates are gathering to boost 'her power' and rewrite the next chapter for gender equality.

Spearheaded by Chinese President Xi Jinping – who's known for championing women's development – this summit will set a fresh agenda. Back in 2015, at the UN's Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment meeting, Xi laid out four guiding principles: sync women's progress with social growth, protect rights, build inclusive communities and create an open global scene.

So, what's 'her power' look like today in China? Let's break it down:

  • 🚀 Poverty-Busting Success: Since 2013, targeted programs have lifted millions of women out of poverty, bringing 690 million people to a comfortable lifestyle.
  • 🔬 Science & Tech Gains: Nearly 46% of the nation's scientific workforce are women, over half of internet entrepreneurs are led by women, and 42.3% of judges are female – a real level-up in leadership roles!
  • 💓 Health & Longevity: Thanks to robust health services, average life expectancy for women tops 80 years. The World Health Organization even ranks China among the best for maternal and child health.

These wins didn't happen by accident. Gender equality is now a core national policy, integrated into China's Five-sphere Integrated Plan. From free schooling and vocational training to comprehensive health coverage, the Chinese mainland has built a system where women can truly thrive.

China isn't stopping at its borders. Over the last decade, it's donated $20 million to UN Women, teamed up with UNESCO on a Prize for Girls' and Women's Education, and hosted 29 international women's conferences. Plus, women-focused projects worth nearly $40 million are active across 20+ countries 🌏.

Still, global hurdles remain: gender-based violence, education gaps, and underrepresentation persist. A recent UN Women report warns we're off track to meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 – 351 million women could still face extreme poverty, and 676 million live near conflict zones.

That's why this week's Global Leaders' Meeting on Women is so crucial. UN Women's Executive Director Sima Bahous says China's approach offers valuable lessons for the world. With her power on the rise, women everywhere have more reasons to hope – and to keep pushing for progress.

Stay tuned, stay inspired, and let's keep cheering for 'her power'! 💪✨
