China Calls Reunification an ‘Irreversible’ Trend Amid Taiwan Remarks

In a firm statement on Friday, foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun urged visiting politicians to immediately stop interfering in the Chinese mainland’s internal affairs and to refrain from supporting “Taiwan independence” separatist activities. 🌏

In response to remarks by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te, Guo said the Chinese mainland “consistently and resolutely opposes” any form of official engagement between the Taiwan region and countries that have diplomatic ties with the Chinese mainland. “Whether driven by selfish interests or the plan to use Taiwan to contain China, these politicians are miscalculating and headed for failure,” he warned.

“There is but one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory. This is the real status quo across the Taiwan Strait,” the spokesperson emphasized. He added that the biggest threats to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait at present are the separatist activities for “Taiwan independence” and external interference. ⚠️

Guo also pointed out that authorities in the Taiwan region had peddled the false narrative of “democracy vs. authoritarianism” and distorted historical facts. He accused them of crafting disinformation to resist reunification through military buildup, a move he said could push the island of Taiwan toward the danger of military conflict.

Highlighting the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, Guo underscored that Taiwan’s restoration to the Chinese mainland was a key outcome of that triumph. “UNGA Resolution 2758 resolved, politically, legally and procedurally, the representation of the whole of China, including the Taiwan region, at the UN. It confirms that the one-China principle is an absolute pillar of the existing international order,” he added.

Any attempt to challenge Resolution 2758, Guo warned, would be a challenge to the Chinese mainland’s sovereignty, the UN’s authority and the post-war international framework. “These moves would not only be ridiculous but also extremely dangerous,” he concluded.

For those following Asia politics, this statement is a reminder of how sensitive cross-strait ties remain 🤝.
