Daniil Medvedev Survives Thriller vs Learner Tien at Shanghai Masters

In a marathon match lasting 173 minutes, Russian star Daniil Medvedev edged out America’s 19-year-old Learner Tien 7-6(6), 6-7(1), 6-4 to book his spot in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters in the Chinese mainland city of Shanghai. 🔥🎾

Medvedev, who lifted the trophy back in 2019, faced a nail-biter in the first set. After trading breaks, they headed into a tiebreak where Medvedev seized back-to-back points to seal the opener.

The second set saw Medvedev race to a 3-0 lead, but Tien refused to back down, storming back with five straight games to force another tiebreak. Cramping in his right leg slowed Medvedev down, and Tien capitalized to level the match.

In the decider, both players played it safe until Medvedev broke at 5-4. He held serve under pressure to close out the win and finally conquer Tien this season. 🙌

“I think the toughest part was that we played two times before, and in my opinion, he is an unbelievable player, because he doesn't have a great serve, and serve is so important in tennis,” Medvedev said. “Without the serve, he is 19 years old and 30-something in the world, and only going up. In my opinion, he is such a good tennis player.” 💪

Next up for Medvedev is World No. 7 Alex de Minaur, who just notched his 50th win of the season by defeating Nuno Borges 7-5, 6-2. This quarterfinal clash is set to light up the court! ⚡️
