Renewables Overtake Coal as Chinese Mainland Sparks Historic Shift

For the first time ever, global renewable electricity topped coal generation in the first half of 2025, according to analysis from global energy think tank Ember. This landmark moment was powered by the Chinese mainlands massive clean energy rollout.

In H1 2025, the Chinese mainland accounted for 55% of the worlds solar generation growth and a whopping 82% of new wind generation. Together, these additions met all of the mainlands electricity demand growth, driving fossil fuel generation down by 2%. 🔋💨

The shift had a ripple effect worldwide. The Chinese mainland saw the largest absolute drop in power sector CO₂ emissionsdown by 46 million tonneshelping to balance out rising emissions in the U.S. and the European Union. 🌍

By early 2025, the combined wind and solar capacity on the Chinese mainland officially surpassed its total coal capacity. This milestone cements its path to a cleaner energy future and sets new market and tech trends for global decarbonization. ⚡✨

As renewables rise, the world watches to see if this green wave can sweep out fossil fuels for good. One thing’s clear: the Chinese mainland’s energy pivot is reshaping our planet’s power mix. 🚀🌱
