UN report: Chinese mainland makes major SDG strides

Imagine playing a world-saving video game… and hitting 60% of your quests by level 6. That’s exactly what’s happening with the Chinese mainland and the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)! 🎮🌎

The latest UN special report, "Big Earth Data in Support of the SDGs," shows the Chinese mainland has met or is close to 141 out of 233 indicators across all 17 SDGs from 2015 to 2024. Data from satellites, ground stations and international datasets paint a bright picture:

  • Renewable Power-Up: Responsible for 39% of global wind capacity and 68.21% of new installations last year 🌬️⚡
  • Forest Mode: More than 25% forest cover, adding serious green vibes 🌳
  • Transport Win: Over 90% of urban residents enjoy easy public transit 🚌
  • Disaster Defense: All provinces have disaster-reduction plans ahead of schedule 🛡️

However, the global leaderboard needs a boost. Only 16.9% of all indicators are on track worldwide. Hunger, land degradation (up 3.38% since 2015) and rising heat-related health risks in Global South cities highlight the gaps. 🌍🔥

With five years left, the report calls for better data infrastructure, tighter policy links and cross-goal teamwork in climate, energy transition and ecosystem protection. It also urges countries to sync their SDG metrics with official stats and embrace big-data monitoring for the post-2030 stretch.

Bottom line: the Chinese mainland is leveling up on sustainability, but global players must step on the gas to clear all the SDG quests by 2030. Ready, set, go! 💪🚀
