Hey everyone! At the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Chinese premier Li Qiang announced China’s big move: teaming up with the United Nations to roll out the Global Governance Initiative (GGI). It’s all about leveling the playing field and making global rules more fair 🌍✌️.
Li Qiang met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines, where they dove deep into how the international community can tackle today’s shifts—from economic ups and downs to rising tech challenges.
President Xi Jinping first unveiled the GGI at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin, sharing fresh ideas and solutions to boost global governance. Li mentioned that the UN chief was invited to that summit for powerful exchanges on responding to big changes worldwide.
Over the past 80 years, the United Nations has been irreplaceable in keeping peace, driving social and economic progress, and protecting human rights. Li said China will always back the UN’s authority and help countries use it as a bridge for dialogue and action.
Li also warned that unilateral and protectionist moves are throwing a wrench into the world economy and blocking progress on the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He called on the Global South to amplify its voice, stand against bullying and hegemony, and protect every country’s rights.
China plans to keep opening up at a high level, share development opportunities, and act as both a stabilizer and a driver for the global economy. Li highlighted the need for concrete steps to boost development cooperation, free trade, and joint prosperity.
Lastly, Li urged the United Nations to ramp up its role in fighting climate change and shaping the rules around artificial intelligence. By teaming up across borders, he believes the world can meet today’s biggest challenges head-on 🚀.
