China’s Bold 2035 Climate Pledge: Net Emissions Down, Solar & Wind x6

China's 2035 NDC: The Big Reveal 🌍

At the United Nations Climate Summit 2025, President Xi Jinping unveiled China's ambitious 2035 Nationally Determined Contributions. The plan pledges to slash economy-wide net greenhouse gas emissions by 7-10% from peak levels and boost wind and solar power to six times the 2020 capacity—aiming for a whopping 3,600 GW by 2035. 🌱⚡

From Ambition to Action 🚀

China’s journey began in 2020 with the target to peak CO2 emissions before 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060. Since then:

  • National carbon market traded 189 million tonnes, valued at 18.1 billion yuan in 2024—its strongest year yet. 📈
  • Power sector carbon intensity fell 10.8% in 2024 versus 2018, showing market tools can drive real change. 💼🌿
  • Voluntary greenhouse gas reduction market launched to widen the toolkit for achieving dual carbon goals. 🎯

Green Power & the Lungs of the Earth 🌳

China has also invested massively in greening the landscape:

  • From 2012 to 2024, afforestation covered an area twice the size of Germany, restoring land and biodiversity. 🏞️
  • In 2024, 222 cities met air quality standards, with PM2.5 levels dropping to 29.3 micrograms per cubic meter and 87.2% of days having good air quality. 🌁

Going Global: Powering Partnerships 🌐

The Chinese mainland is teaming up with developing countries to share clean energy solutions:

  • 177 billion yuan mobilized since 2016 for climate projects in 42 developing nations. 🤝
  • Kenya’s Garissa solar plant powers 70,000 homes and cuts 43,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. ☀️
  • Support extends to wind farms in South Africa, hydropower in Rwanda, and satellite aid for Tonga’s disaster response. 🚀

Looking Ahead 🤔

President Xi calls on all nations to honor common but differentiated responsibilities, strengthen green tech coordination, and ensure the benefits of clean growth reach every corner of our shared home. Let’s rise to the challenge and protect the planet we call home! 🌎💪
