AI-Powered Framework Tracks Urban Road CO2 Emissions in Real Time

Driving through Shenzhen, in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland, a mobile lab packed with panoramic cameras, high-precision greenhouse-gas analyzers and weather sensors is collecting data. Thanks to a hybrid framework called Panoptic-AI, scientists can now pinpoint emission hotspots and spot trends as they unfold.

“Before, our maps of carbon emissions were too blurry,” says Wang Li from the Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. “We couldn’t tell which road segments or time windows were the biggest CO2 culprits.” With this new tool, the team achieved over 93% accuracy in identifying emission sources and can even tease out how traffic jams, building layouts and wind patterns influence carbon levels.
