China Urges Strengthening Multilateralism at UN General Assembly

Heads up! On Friday at the UN General Assembly in New York, Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative, called for a big push: multilateralism is the name of the game. 🌏🤝

He introduced draft resolution A/79/L.124 on cooperation between the UN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), noting the SCO has grown into the world's largest regional bloc—27 participating states, 50+ cooperation areas, and nearly $30 trillion in combined economic output.

At the recent SCO summit in Tianjin—the biggest yet with over 20 heads of state and 10 international organizations—multilateralism stole the spotlight. The China-proposed Global Governance Initiative (GGI) received a warm welcome as leaders agreed the world needs fresh ideas for fairness, justice, and effective governance.

Geng pointed out the summit's declaration mentioned the UN more than 40 times, underlining dedication to the UN Charter, the Sustainable Development Goals, and necessary UN reforms. UN Secretary-General António Guterres even praised the SCO's collaboration with the UN.

Now, draft resolution A/79/L.124 aims to boost UN-SCO teamwork on peace, development, and global challenges. Geng urged all member states to back the resolution and send a powerful signal that multilateralism is here to stay!
