🔥 Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou cluster just claimed the No.1 spot in WIPO's 2025 Global Innovation Index! This Asia powerhouse overtook Tokyo-Yokohama after five years at second place, flexing its R&D, patents, and venture capital muscle.
According to WIPO, the top 100 global innovation clusters are judged on three metrics: international patent filings via the Patent Cooperation Treaty, scientific publications, and, for the first time, venture capital deals. This year's list spans 33 economies, with China leading at 24 clusters, the U.S. close behind at 22, and Germany at seven.
A spokesperson for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government says this ranking highlights the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s innovative edge. Hong Kong will keep joining forces with its GBA sister cities to drive tech breakthroughs and shape a smarter future. 🤝
Zhang Zhicheng, deputy director of the China National Intellectual Property Administration, notes that the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou cluster has consistently ranked among the world’s top innovation hubs, underscoring the vibrancy of China’s innovation scene.
Chen Jiachang, vice minister of China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, points out that Hong Kong’s research institutions, global talent network, and strong IP system make it a key link in the international innovation chain.
