In a blockbuster start to the year, the Chinese mainland’s box office revenue has raced past the 40 billion yuan mark (about $5.61 billion), according to China Media Group. This milestone arrived a full three months earlier than in 2024, signaling a booming appetite for the big screen. 🎉
Domestic audiences played a leading role, with more than 900 million admissions driving local earnings to 39.23 billion yuan. Meanwhile, overseas releases also made waves. The animated hit Ne Zha 2, a fresh take on the classic legend, and Dead to Rights, a powerful portrayal of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre, have together pushed international ticket sales past 770 million yuan.
Record-breaking summer season 📽️☀️
The summer movie season (June 1–Aug 31) alone generated 11.64 billion yuan by Friday evening. Alongside Dead to Rights, the top five summer performers included:
- Nobody, a thrilling spinoff from the acclaimed Yao-Chinese Folktales animation series;
- The Shadow’s Edge, a high-octane crime action film starring Jackie Chan;
- The Lychee Road, a drama set in the Tang Dynasty starring comedian Da Peng;
- Universal’s global hit Jurassic World Rebirth.
With cameras rolling and popcorn popping, the Chinese mainland cinema scene is showing no signs of slowing down. Whether you’re a fan of local legends or international blockbusters, 2025 is proving to be a year to remember at the movies! 🍿🎉
