Dongji Island’s WWII Rescue: Fishermen’s Heroic Mission

Imagine it's September 1942: the Lisbon Maru, carrying over 1,800 British prisoners of war, is hit by a torpedo near Dongji Island, Zhoushan on the Chinese mainland. Chaos ensues as the ship begins to sink.

With cabins sealed and gunfire raining down, hope seems lost. Then brave local fishermen leap into action 🚣‍♂️, risking their lives to navigate debris-filled waters and pull survivors to safety under enemy fire. Their courage turned tragedy into a testament of solidarity.

Fast-forward to August 8, 2025: after six years of research and seven months of underwater filming, the documentary Dongji Rescue hits cinemas 🎥. Director Guan Hu says it’s all about sharing the kindness and bravery of the Chinese people with the world—and ensuring these heroes aren’t forgotten.

Today, Dongji Island stands as a living monument to friendship, peace, and the power of ordinary people to do extraordinary things 🌊💙.
