Chinese mainland slams Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te over WWII narrative

At a Friday press conference, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, pushed back against a recent post by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te that framed World War II as a fight between “democracy” and “authoritarianism.”

According to Zhu, Lai’s narrative distorts the historical truth of World War II by mixing up right and wrong. She reminded audiences that, 80 years ago, Chinese people—including residents of Taiwan—made huge sacrifices to defend national sovereignty and dignity against Japanese militarists. Taiwan’s restoration and return to the motherland was a crucial part of this victory and the post-war international order. 🕊️

Zhu went on to accuse Lai of ignoring the facts of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and of pushing a separatist fallacy of “Taiwan independence” by seeking foreign support. 🚫🤝

Zhu also cautioned that challenging the post-war international order would bring only disgrace. She called on people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to remember history, protect the fruits of victory, and firmly oppose Taiwan independence and foreign interference. ✊

This exchange underscores how historical interpretation can deepen political divides in cross-strait ties. 📚✨
