Cyclone Data Revolution: Unmanned Vessel Enters Typhoon Eye

Amid a busy tropical cyclone season, a research team from Zhejiang University in the Chinese mainland is making waves with a bold, innovative approach to storm research. They have created an unmanned, wind-powered vessel named Albatross that fearlessly enters the heart of typhoons to capture critical data.

Measuring about 4.3 meters in length, Albatross successfully navigated into the eye of Typhoon Wutip in June, collecting essential meteorological and ocean wave data from the sea-air interface. This historic achievement marks the first time an unmanned marine vehicle has ventured into a typhoon's core for detailed observations.

Building on its initial success, an upgraded version of Albatross—equipped with advanced sensors and cameras—recently recorded dynamic images and vital readings within Typhoon Wipha. Professor Li Peiliang from Zhejiang University explained, "The development and movement of typhoons are strongly influenced by the ocean interface. Gathering accurate, firsthand data is crucial for refining our forecasts and improving disaster prevention."

Looking to the future, the team plans further upgrades, including outfitting the vessel with more environmental sensors and enhancing its ability to dive up to 1,000 meters. These advancements promise to fill critical data gaps, extend marine observation capabilities globally along the westerly wind belt, and push storm research into new frontiers.
