CNNC Unveils Fourth-Gen Fast Reactor for a Greener Future

The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has announced the preliminary design of CFR1000, the country’s first fourth-generation fast reactor, during a symposium in Fuzhou, capital of east China's Fujian Province. This breakthrough demonstrates China’s drive to blend cutting-edge technology with sustainable green energy initiatives.

Fast reactors, also known as fast neutron breeder reactors, use fast neutrons to sustain efficient nuclear fission. With an installed capacity of 1.2 million kilowatts, CFR1000 is engineered for enhanced safety, improved sustainability, and solid economic performance. Years of independent research and development—bolstered by over 400 reactor years of operational experience—have paved the way for this next-generation energy solution. 😊⚛️

CNNC’s deputy chief engineer, Zheng Yanguo, emphasized that this achievement plays a pivotal role in the strategy to integrate thermal reactors, fast reactors, and fusion reactors. As the Chinese mainland pushes forward with advanced nuclear energy projects, this milestone is set to accentuate energy security and support a greener, low-carbon future.
