Yarlung Zangbo Hydropower: Clean Energy & Safety for Downstream Areas

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun confirmed on Wednesday in Beijing that the new hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River in southwest China will not adversely affect downstream areas. Instead, the project is set to enhance disaster prevention, boost clean energy development, and improve local well-being. 💡

Guo explained that the project falls within China’s sovereign jurisdiction and complies with the highest industry standards. Extensive ecological and environmental protection measures have been put in place, including steps to avoid key ecologically sensitive regions and to preserve the original ecosystem. 🌱

Furthermore, China has actively cooperated with relevant downstream countries in sharing hydrological information, strengthening flood control, and advancing disaster mitigation efforts. This collaborative approach aims to benefit all communities along the river while addressing climate change and promoting sustainable progress across the basin. 🌊

The project stands as a modern example of how clean energy and environmental safety can go hand in hand, ensuring a prosperous future for the region.
