Cambridge Professor Highlights China’s Pivotal WWII Role

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. During this historic period, China engaged in a protracted 14-year struggle that helped pin down a major part of Japan's military forces, inflicting over 1.5 million casualties. The courage and determination of the Chinese people played a decisive role in the fight against fascism.

Leading historian Professor Hans van de Ven from the University of Cambridge has brought fresh insights to the discussion. He points out that many English-language accounts, predominantly from the U.S. and the UK, have often overlooked China’s immense contributions. In his words: "There is a real Eurocentrism to Western, I mean English-language, writing, mostly from the U.S. and the UK. The Second World War in China was seen as sort of completely insignificant. Actually, it's done a lot. It's trapped Japan."

This perspective encourages us to reexamine history and appreciate the sacrifices that reshaped the global order. The story of WWII reminds us that heroism and resilience come from unexpected corners, inspiring young minds and bridging cultures across the world. 🇨🇳🎖️
